Ship strikes northeastern Wisconsin bridge

smswsf.wordpress.com

STURGEON BAY, WI (AP)--   Wisconsin officials say a large ship struck a Sturgeon Bay bridge during a docking attempt.

State Department of Transportation spokesman Mark Kantola says two tugboats were trying to maneuver a large freighter called the Texas into a dock near the Maple-Oregon Bridge Friday morning. He says one of the tugboats was unable to slow the ship's momentum and it struck a pedestrian walkway on the bridge.

Kantola says the Texas was traveling at about 2 mph when it hit the walkway. He says the walkway's railing bent and the ship lost some paint.

DOT engineers inspected the bridge and found no structural damage. The bridge remains open.
