Woman hospitalized after snowmobile crash

Alger County Sheriff's Department

VAN MEER, MI--   A Wisconsin woman has been injured in an Alger County snowmobile accident.

Sheriff’s deputies were called Tuesday to Trail #8 near the Bear Trap restaurant in Van Meer.  They say Jayne Sue Hayes of Sturgeon Bay was northbound around 3:25 p.m. when she became disoriented on a curve.  Her sled left the trail, struck several trees, and ejected Hayes.

Alger County Rescue 21 and Alger County EMS were able to remove Hayes from the trail.  She was taken to Munising Memorial Hospital, then transferred by Valley Med Flight to U.P. Health System Marquette, where she remains in serious condition.

Officials do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
