DETROIT, MI (AP)-- There apparently has been another death caused by an exploding automobile air bag made by Takata Corporation of Japan.
Senator Bill Nelson of Florida said on the Senate floor Thursday that a Texas man was killed earlier this month when a Takata air bag inflated in a low-speed crash and sent a piece of shrapnel into the man's neck. The man died before police arrived.
Nelson gave no other details, but Honda says the crash happened January 18th in the Houston area. The company says the man's 2002 Accord was part of a 2011 recall, but it had not been repaired. Honda says it hasn't been able to inspect the car yet.
If confirmed, the death would be the sixth worldwide caused by the Japanese auto parts maker's air bags.
