Explosion kills power to City of Escanaba

ESCANABA, MI--   An explosion at an Escanaba power plant has cut electricity to the city.

Public Safety officers say it happened at the plant substation Sunday night/early Monday morning.  Most of Escanaba and surrounding communities have no power, which also means no heat.  The Escanaba Civic Center has been opened as a warming shelter for those who need it.

Power plant officials and crews from Upper Peninsula Power Company are working to restore service, but no one knows when that might happen.

No injuries from the explosion were reported.

Below is a video of the substation fire, which occurred around 1:20 a.m. Monday.  Posted by nosenseracing on YouTube.
