Boy airlifted to hospital following car/bicycle crash in Laurium

LAURIUM, MI--   A 13-year-old Green Bay boy is hospitalized, following a car-bicycle accident in Houghton County.

Troopers from the Calumet Post say the crash happened Tuesday around 7:20 p.m. at the intersection of South Calumet Street and South Hecla Street in the Village of Laurium.  They say a vehicle driven by a 35-year-old Calumet man was northbound on South Calumet Street when the boy riding his bike failed to stop at the intersection.  The vehicle was unable to stop in time and struck the bicyclist.

The boy was taken to Aspirus Keweenaw, then airlifted to University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin with possible head injuries.  His condition is unknown at this time.

Police say the driver of the vehicle had the right-of-way and was not speeding.  No citations have been issued.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
