Gwinn kayaker saved from Bass Lake

FORSYTH TOWNSHIP, MI--   A female kayaker was saved from a Forsyth Township lake when her kayak capsized Tuesday.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office responded to Bass Lake around 3 p.m.  Rescue personnel used a boat to locate and pull Susan Lafreniere, 57, of Gwinn from the water.

She had been out with another person when her kayak flipped.  Lafreniere wasn’t able to re-enter the vessel or swim to shore because of high waves.  Deputies say by the time the other kayaker got to shore and called 911 a couple of hours had passed.

Lafreniere was wearing a personal flotation device at the time of the incident—a fact that officials say contributed to saving her life.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
