Kayakers become stranded near black rocks in Marquette

MARQUETTE, MI--   Two kayakers had to be rescued from Presque Isle Park after their kayaks flipped over Tuesday night.

The Marquette Fire Department was called to a site near the black rocks around 11:50 p.m. and found the two males, who had swum to a rock near the shoreline.  Firefighters repelled 50 feet down to the men, who were placed in rescue harnesses and raised to safety.  They were mildly hypothermic but stable.

The Marquette Police Department, UP Health System Marquette, and U.S. Coast Guard assisted at the scene.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
