Drowning in Stanton Township

STANTON TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Houghton County man has drowned, after swimming with his granddaughter in Lake Superior.

Sheriff’s deputies say the incident happened Saturday around 11 a.m. off of Stanton Shores Road in Stanton Township.  They say the 87-year-old man started having breathing problems as he swam.  His 11-year-old granddaughter tried to help, but he told her to go back to shore.  When she got to shore she looked back, but he had slipped under the water.  The girl ran to a nearby residence, where they called 911.

Emergency personnel found the man’s body 30 feet from shore in about 6 feet of water.  He was taken to U.P. Health System Portage, where he was pronounced dead.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
