Atlantic Mine teen dies in car accident

STANTON TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person was killed in a single-vehicle rollover accident in Houghton County on Saturday.

Sheriff’s deputies say the crash happened around 4 a.m. on Beacon Hill Toivola Road near Freda Road in Stanton Township.  Both the driver and passenger were ejected from the vehicle.

The driver—a 19-year-old Atlantic Mine man—was pronounced dead at the scene.  The passenger was taken to UP Health System Portage, then transferred to UP Health System Marquette for treatment.

Deputies believe alcohol was a factor in the accident, which remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
