Dirt bikes crash in Schoolcraft County

THOMPSON TOWNSHIP, MI--   Two Manistique men were ticketed for reckless driving after crashing their dirt bikes in Thompson Township Saturday.

State Police from the Manistique Detachment say the crash happened on County Road 442 west of M-94 around 3:30 p.m.  Witnesses say a dirt bike ridden by a 20-year-old man had been driving recklessly when it passed a Ford Explorer pulling a camper.  A second bike driven by a 19-year-old man then apparently performed a wheelie for about 100 yards as he passed the truck and camper, lost control, and collided with the first bike.  Both bikes crashed into the ditch.  The driver of the truck was able to avoid hitting both riders.

The two men were taken to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital.  The driver who performed the wheelie was transferred to UP Health System Marquette with multiple hip fractures.

Troopers say neither alcohol nor drugs were factors in the crash.

The names of the men are being withheld, pending arraignment in Schoolcraft County District Court.
