Laurium woman dead in single vehicle accident

HOUGHTON COUNTY, MI - A Houghton County woman is dead following a one-vehicle crash. The accident happened Sunday afternoon at about 5:30 on US-41 near Highway Location Road. Witnesses report the vehicle crossed the center-line, traveled a short distance along the shoulder, and struck a tree which caused it to burst into flames. An off-duty firefighter and an off-duty Keweenaw County sheriff’s deputy assisted at the scene.

The 48-year old female driver, from Laurium, was taken to Aspirus Keweenaw where she was pronounced dead. A dog in the vehicle was injured and is being treated for injuries at Northland Vet in Hancock.

The name of the victim is being withheld at this time. Alcohol and drugs are not considered factors in the crash.

Assisting at the scene were members of the Calumet Township Fire Department, Mercy Ambulance, Houghton County Sheriff's Department, and Superior Service Towing.
