Truck crashes in Delta County, spills diesel

DELTA COUNTY, MI--   A downstate man is lodged in the Delta County Jail, following a semi crash over the weekend on M-35 South.

Sheriff’s deputies were called early Saturday morning to a site near the Breezy Point bar and found the tractor-trailer in the ditch.  The 37-year-old driver had apparently crossed the centerline, entered the ditch, and jackknifed the trailer.  It hit a retaining wall in a yard, which ruptured a fuel tank and spilled about 30 gallons of diesel onto the ground.

The driver was arrested for operating under the influence of drugs.  He awaits arraignment in 94th District Court.

The Department of Environmental Quality was called in to investigate the spill.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
