Fatal snowmobile crash in Calumet Township

CALUMET TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Wisconsin man has died in a snowmobile accident in Houghton County.

State Police from the Calumet Post say the crash happened Tuesday around 1:30 p.m. in Calumet Township.  Christopher Scott Houchin, 21, of Salem, Wisconsin was southbound on Trail #3 near Copper City when his snowmobile left the trail and struck a tree. 

Houchin was taken to UP Health System Portage, where he was pronounced dead. 

The cause of the accident is under investigation, but officials say alcohol is not believed to be a factor. 

Assisting at the scene were the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department, Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, Laurium Police Department, DNR Law Enforcement officers, the Calumet Township First Responders, and Keweenaw Trail Service.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
