Man dies in Gogebic County snowmobile accident

WAKEFIELD, MI--   Michigan State Police from the Wakefield Post are investigating a fatal snowmobile crash in Gogebic County.

Troopers say it happened Sunday around 11 p.m. on Trail 2 near Barb Lake, about six miles east of Marenisco.

John Riley, 61, of Darling, WI was riding with a group of snowmobilers when his machine left the trail and struck a tree.  He died of his injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, but officials believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department and Marenisco Police Department assisted at the scene.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
