Girl hit by car in Hurontown

HURONTOWN, MI--   A 9-year-old girl was injured in a car-pedestrian accident in Houghton County Wednesday.

Sheriff’s deputies say the incident happened around 3:50 p.m. in Hurontown near the fire department and Horatio Street.  The little girl and her brother were waiting for traffic to clear so they could cross the road.  When she thought the coast was clear she started to run across the street and was struck by a vehicle that was northbound on Main Street.

The girl suffered non-life-threatening injuries.  She was taken to UP Health System Portage for treatment.  The female driver from Pelkie was not injured.

The Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by Houghton City Police and Michigan State Police.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
