Identities of two killed in M-189 crash released

IRON COUNTY, MI--   Officials have released the names of those involved in a fatal accident in Iron County.

The crash happened Tuesday on M-189 south of the Osterlund Road intersection.  The Iron County Sheriff’s Office says Jeremy Lee Johnson, 35, of Iron River was driving northbound when the vehicle left the roadway and rolled over.  Johnson wasn’t wearing a seat belt and was ejected.  His passenger, Michael Paul Prepodnik, 39, of Iron River, was trapped in the vehicle.

Both men died of their injuries.

Iron County Central Dispatch says it had received complaints earlier in the day that the vehicle had been driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed.  Police were looking for the vehicle when the accident happened.

Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
