UPDATE: Fatal plane crash in Ely Township

UPDATE, 10:45 AM:--  State Police have released the names of those killed in the crash.  They are Dean Honkala, 49, of Ishpeming and William Brewer, 48, of Ishpeming.  It's unclear at this time who was piloting the aircraft.

Additional information will be released after the FAA completes its investigation over the next few days.

ELY TOWNSHIP, MI--   A plane crash in Marquette County’s Ely Township has claimed the lives of two people. 

State Police from the Negaunee Post say the plane went down Monday around 8:07 p.m. near a grassy runway by County Road CD.  Two people were in the aircraft.  Both died of their injuries.  Their names have not been released, pending notification of next-of-kin.

The plane was an Aeronca 11AC, a two-seat, high-wing aircraft. 

The Grand Rapids Flight Station, the FAA, and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified and will investigate the crash scene.  A preliminary cause has not been determined.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Marquette County Search and Rescue, Ishpeming Township Police, Ely Township First Responders, UPHS Bell EMS, and Valley Med Flight assisted troopers at the scene.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
