UPDATE: Motorcyclist dies in Houghton County crash

UPDATE, 7/21/16:  Police have released the names of those involved in the crash.  The driver of the motorcycle is identified as Mackenzie Roelse, 22, of Sheboygan, WI.  The driver of the vehicle was Madeline Lehman, 17, of Houghton.

Troopers say Roelse may have been distracted and didn't see the vehicle stopped in front of her until it was too late to avoid the crash.

CHASSELL TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person has been killed in a car/motorcycle accident in Houghton County.

State Police from the Calumet Post say it happened Wednesday around 3:30 p.m. on US-41 at the intersection of Portage Entry Road in Chassell Township.

Troopers say a vehicle was stopped on the highway, waiting to turn onto Portage Entry Road, when it was struck from behind by the motorcycle.

The female biker was pronounced dead at the scene. She was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.  The female driver of the vehicle sought her own treatment for minor injuries. 

Their names have not been released, pending notification of next-of-kin.

The crash remains under investigation.

State Police were assisted by the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, Mercy Ambulance, Chassell First Responders, and the Chassell Fire Department.    

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
