Pedestrian struck by car in Sands Township

SANDS TOWNSHIP, MI--   A pedestrian was injured in a traffic accident in Sands Township over the weekend. 

Troopers from the Negaunee Post say it happened Sunday around 12:35 p.m. on M-553 near Station Road.  A Subaru driven by Wells Chapin, 73, of Gwinn was northbound on 553 when Jesse Tuimala, 23, of Gwinn crossed on foot into the northbound lane from a vehicle parked on the eastern shoulder. 

Tuimala was taken to UPHS Marquette for treatment of his injuries.  Chapin wasn’t injured.

Troopers say no foul play, alcohol, or drugs are suspected in the accident, which remains under investigation.  

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
