ATV crash kills Calumet man

CALUMET TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Calumet man has been killed in an ATV accident in Houghton County.

Michigan State Police from the Calumet Post say Thursday around 5:30 p.m. troopers were dispatched to Trail 3 near Portland Street in Calumet Township.

They say James Meshbesher, 54, had driven his ATV up an embankment to a decommissioned train trestle.  At the top of the embankment he tried to turn around and lost control of the ATV, which went airborne.  The vehicle and Meshbesher both landed on the trail.

Meshbesher was able to call for help.  He was taken to UP Health System Portage and pronounced dead.

Troopers say alcohol appears to be a factor in the accident, which remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
