Garbage truck snaps power lines in Sawyer

SAWYER, MI--   Some residents in the Sawyer area lost power Friday after a garbage truck became tangled in power lines.

Around 7:05 a.m. a Marquette County Sheriff’s deputy saw what appeared to be fireworks around M-94 and Avenue A. A closer look revealed it was a North Country Disposal truck that caught a low-hanging power line.  When the truck kept going it broke a power pole in half, damaged another, and snapped some lines.  A Charter cable line also snapped and lay across M-94.

Traffic was diverted from the area and a portion of the highway was closed between Voodoo and Avenue D, but has since reopened.

At noon First Street and the southern portion of Avenue A near Third Street were closed as UPPCO crews worked on repairs.

There may be additional power outages as the lines are replaced.

No injuries were reported.
