Snowmobilers go through ice near Grand Island

GRAND ISLAND, MI--   Four snowmobilers were rescued from Grand Island Saturday after their snowmobiles broke through the ice.

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office was notified around 10:45 a.m. that snowmobilers had gone through the ice near the east channel of the island. All subjects were able to pull themselves out of the water and make it to land.

The Sheriff’s Office Rescue 21 Unit used a hovercraft to rescue all four people. They were treated by Alger EMS and released without any injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office warns residents that ice conditions near Grand Island and the east channel are very weak. Anyone who goes on the ice should use extreme caution.
