Boat capsizes off Eastern U.P., four rescued

DETOUR, MI--   Four people were rescued by a good Samaritan after their boat capsized in Lake Huron near Detour Village.

Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie received a call Wednesday evening from the freighter Lee A. Tregurtha. A 17-foot pleasure craft with four people aboard had capsized near Detour Passage. Coast Guard officials diverted the Cutter Buckthorn, launched a response boat crew, and requested a helicopter from Air Station Traverse City.

About five minutes later a good Samaritan who heard the urgent broadcast arrived at the scene and brought all four people onboard their vessel. The four were taken to the Detour village boat launch. No injuries were reported.

The vessel sank in about 135 feet of water. The Coast Guard is monitoring the area for pollution or navigation hazards.
