Guilty party determined in Ishpeming school bus crash

ISHPEMING, MI--   Ishpeming Police have determined who was at fault in a car/bus crash in the city last month.

On the morning of September 19 an Ishpeming Public Schools bus driven by Daniel Rantanen, 24, was northbound on Hickory Street and crossing US-41 when it was hit by a westbound Dodge Avenger driven by Jamie Leigh Rosten, 25. The bus was full of elementary students.

Officials say the posted speed limit on US-41 in that area is 45 mph. The Avenger hit the bus near the rear wheels, causing the bus to spin and hit a utility pole on the northwest corner of the intersection.

Through interviews conducted of witnesses, evidence obtained and evaluated at the scene, and expertise from the Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit, police determined Rosten was driving faster than the speed limit and at such a rate that she forfeited her right of way.

Rosten will be ticketed for careless driving.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
