Mass City teen accidentally killed with rifle

MASS CITY, MI--   A 16-year-old boy has been killed in an accidental shooting in Ontonagon County. 

The county Sheriff’s Office says it happened Friday just after 3 p.m. at a home in Mass City. Investigation revealed a 13-year-old boy and the 16-year-old were at the 13-year-old’s residence. The younger boy was loading a rifle when the weapon discharged and hit the older boy in the back. A 14-year-old boy in the house called 9-1-1.

The victim was taken to Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies were assisted by Michigan DNR law enforcement officers, a U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer, and the Michigan Sheriff Association Victim Services Unit.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
