Car hits bicyclist in Escanaba

ESCANABA, MI--   An Escanaba man was injured when the bicycle he was riding was hit by a car Thursday.

Public Safety officers say it happened around 8:20 p.m. on the 200 block of North Lincoln Road. They say a 36-year-old Escanaba woman was northbound and didn’t see the man “shoot” across the road from 1st Avenue North.

The 59-year-old rider was taken to St. Francis Hospital, then transferred to UPHS-Marquette for further treatment.

Escanaba Public Safety is reminding the public of bicycle safety.  The Michigan Motor Vehicle Code does require bicycles to have a working headlamp at night.  A summary of the statute, MCL257.662, requires a headlamp on a bicycle capable of emitting a white light 500 feet ahead when operating one half hour after sunset and one half hour after sunrise.  The code also requires the bicycle to be equipped with a red reflector on the rear of the bike to be visible from all distance 100 to 600 feet.
