Double snowmobile fatality at Lake Gogebic State Park

GOGEBIC COUNTY, MI--   A head-on collision between two snowmobiles has claimed the lives of two men in Gogebic County.

Friday around 7:15 p.m. Michigan State Police from the Wakefield Post and deputies from the Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to Lake Gogebic State Park. Troopers say the accident happened on Lake Gogebic, about 500 feet from shore.

A 23-year-old man from Riverton, Illinois and a 53-year-old man from Darwin, Minnesota were involved in a head-on crash. Officers performed CPR on both men before first responders arrived. Once medical personnel got to the scene both men were pronounced dead.

Speed and alcohol are both believed to have played a role in the accident.

The names of victims are not being released at this time.

Troopers were assisted on scene by Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department, Beacon Ambulance, Marenisco First Responders and Marenisco Township Fire Department.
