Baltic teen hospitalized following pickup/dump truck crash

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person suffered serious injuries in a crash between a pickup and a dump truck in Houghton County Tuesday.

The Sheriff’s Office says it happened at 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Superior and Elsie Roads in Portage Township.

A pickup driven by Trent Nordstrom, 17, of Baltic failed to properly yield at the intersection. He was struck by a Bacco Construction dump truck towing a pup trailer that was southbound on Superior Road. It was driven by Tom St. Pierre, 57, of Manistique.

The dump truck pushed the pickup into the northbound snow bank, causing serious damage to the drivers’ side of the pickup. Nordstrom had to be extricated by the Hurontown Fire Department with the Jaws of Life. He was taken to UPHS-Portage for treatment.

Neither alcohol nor speed are believed to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
