Officials recover body of man who drowned at Breen Township park

BREEN TOWNSHIP, MI--   The body of a drowning victim has been recovered in Dickinson County. 

Michigan State Police from the Iron Mountain Post say on June 29 a man jumped off a pontoon boat into the east branch of the Sturgeon River at Stromberg Park in Hardwood. He never resurfaced.

Agencies searched for Alex McDermott, 28, of Felch over the next several days but were unsuccessful.

On Sunday witnesses on shore discovered McDermott’s body in the water. It was recovered and taken to Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
