L'ANSE TOWNSHIP, MI--   Michigan State Police are investigating a drowning in L’Anse Township Friday.

Troopers responded to Canyon Falls Park around 8 p.m. on a report that a 24-year-old man had jumped into the Sturgeon River and began struggling in the strong current. Witnesses entered the water to help the man, but he was swept downstream and didn’t resurface.

Several law enforcement agencies, fire departments, and search and rescue teams responded to the scene, but nightfall and dangerous conditions forced them to suspend the search until Saturday morning.

The man’s body was found at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday. His identity is not being released at this time.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
