Car catches fire following Houghton crash

HOUGHTON, MI--   A man was able to escape a fiery crash in Houghton early Thursday morning.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office says it happened around 12:15 a.m. on Canal Road near Firehall Road. The driver failed to negotiate a turn in the road and went into the ditch. The car caught fire, but the 21-year-old Illinois man was able to get out without injury.

The man was arrested for operating while intoxicated and lodged at the Houghton County Jail.

Deputies were assisted by the Stanton Township Fire Department and Houghton City Police.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
