KI SAWYER, MI--   The investigation into a Sawyer fire that killed a member of the Forsyth Township Fire Department continues.

Township officials say Ben Lauren, 23, died while fighting the Friday night fire.

Firefighters were dispatched around 9:30 p.m. to a duplex at 108 Albatross Street. Half the structure was engulfed when they arrived.

A woman and her two children escaped. Lauren was killed in the line of duty.

Lauren graduated from Gwinn High School in 2014. His father and sister are also members of the fire department.

In a Facebook post Township officials said Lauren “…was a proud, dedicated and exceptional member of your fire department, and was truly the finest representation of our community's young people - respected and admired by all who knew him.”

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police Fire Marshal are investigating the fire.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
