Drugs, alcohol suspected in Champion crash

CHAMPION TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash in Champion Township on Friday.

Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post responded around 8:20 p.m. to US-41 near County Road AW. Troopers say a pickup truck driven by a 45-year-old Ishpeming woman was westbound on a high rate of speed when she lost control of the vehicle. The truck left the road, flipped several times, and came to rest on its side after hitting a tree.

Both occupants had to be extricated from the truck. They were taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment.

The driver was seriously injured. The passenger—a 51-year-old Ishpeming man—suffered minor injuries.

Drugs and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
