Two vehicles hit moose in Humboldt Township

HUMBOLDT TOWNSHIP, MI--   Two people were injured following a traffic accident with a moose Friday night.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says it happened on M-95 just north of County Road FH in Humboldt Township.

A 55-year-old South Republic man was northbound in a Toyota pickup when he came upon a moose. The truck hit the moose’s head. Its body swung around, hit the side of the vehicle and smashed the windshield.

The driver was able to pull over onto the side of the road.

Around the same time a 50-year-old Arizona woman was southbound on M-95 in a Dodge Ram pickup. She saw something in the road and slowed down but hit the moose lying in her lane. The truck went over the animal, slid into the ditch and rolled twice, coming to rest on its wheels.

Officials had to use the Jaws of Life to get the woman out of the truck. She and her 48-year-old passenger were taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Toyota was not injured.

It’s not known if the moose survived.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
