Man killed in Western UP crash

ONTONAGON COUNTY, MI--   A Gladstone man died in a single-vehicle crash in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.

State Police from the Wakefield Post say a passerby discovered a Ford van around 9 a.m. Saturday off of 107th Engineers Memorial Highway near Lake of the Clouds. Troopers say it appears 31-year-old Jessie Lavigne was northbound when he lost control of his vehicle on a curve. It went into the ditch, struck several trees and rolled over onto its passenger side.

Lavigne was the lone occupant. He had to be extricated from the van.

Lavigne was taken to Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital, then airlifted to UPHS-Marquette, where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
