Fiery crash kills two people in Marquette Township

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI--   Two people were killed in a single-vehicle crash on County Road 550 in Marquette Township Saturday.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office responded around 1 a.m. to Wetmore Landing. They say a Tesla was southbound when it drove off the roadway, struck a power pole, continued a short distance and came to rest in the tree line. The vehicle caught fire and became engulfed.

A man and woman in the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.

County Road 550 was closed for several hours while officials investigated the scene.

Alcohol and excessive speed are believed to be factors in the accident.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
