UPDATE: Houghton County sheriff in critical condition following weekend accident at home

UPDATE: Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean passed away Monday around 8 p.m. at UPHS-Marquette.

He had been on life support prior to his death. 

"The sudden and tragic loss of this man who was both a leader and a friend is hard to process," said Undersheriff Kevin Coppo. "Our hearts go out to his family during this truly difficult time."

McLean was with the department for 34 years and recently held the title of longest-serving sheriff in Michigan. 

Details regarding funeral arrangements will be forthcoming.

HOUGHTON, MI--    Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean is hospitalized, following an accident at his home.

McLean was airlifted to UPHS-Marquette late Saturday night. The Sheriff’s Office says his injuries were significant, requiring life-saving measures from neighbors before medical personnel arrived at the scene.

McLean remains in critical condition.  

No other details are available at this time.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
