Iron River women killed in Sagola Township accident

SAGOLA TOWNSHIP, MI— A Dickinson County crash has taken the lives of two people.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched Thursday around 2:25 p.m. to M-95 near Tobin Lane in Sagola Township. A Jeep Liberty was southbound when the driver lost control, crossed the center line and was hit by a northbound Peterbuilt tractor-trailer.

The driver of the semi tried to avoid the Jeep but struck the passenger side and came to rest in the east ditch.

The driver of the Jeep—a 50-year-old Iron River woman—and her passenger—a 48-year-old Iron River woman—were pronounced dead at the scene.

The semi driver—a 49-year-old man from Hastings, Michigan—was uninjured.

Deputies say speed and poor road conditions appear to have caused the accident.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
