Drowning reported at Marquette County falls

ELY TOWNSHIP, MI— Michigan State Police are investigating a drowning in Marquette County.

Wednesday around 1:50 p.m., troopers from the Negaunee Post and deputies from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to Black River Falls in Ely Township. Someone had reportedly fallen over the falls and into the water.

The unidentified person was later found in the river and pronounced dead at the scene.

No other information is available at this time.

Assisting at the scene were the MSP K-9 unit; the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, Special Operations Division, Underwater Recovery Team, Drone Team and Rescue 131; UPHS-Bell; Ely Township First Responders; the 8th District Hometown Security Team; Ishpeming Township Fire Department; and Marquette County Central Dispatch.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
