Visitor rescued after fall at Grand Island National Recreation Area

GRAND ISLAND NATIONAL PARK, MI— A man is in stable condition, after he fell from a cliff on Grand Island Wednesday.

The Alger County Sheriff's Office and U.S. Forest Service say it happened around noon. The 35-year-old man and others had been riding bicycles around the island when they departed the trail in a remote section on the island’s west side, near the Mather Lodge area. The man approached the edge of the cliff on foot and slipped on a root that was wet from recent rain. He fell about 70 feet, struck the cliff face, and fell into Lake Superior.

The man was helped out of the water by other visitors.

Several agencies—including the U.S. Forest Service, Alger County

Sheriff’s Office, Alger County EMS, Alger County Rescue 21, Munising City Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard, and the National Park Service—responded to the scene. The man was taken to Munising City Marina, where he was airlifted to UPHS-Marquette. He’s reported to be in stable condition.

The U.S. Forest Service is investigating the incident.

The Hiawatha National Forest encourages visitors to recreate responsibly. Many areas of the Forest are remote, making emergency response difficult.
