Downstate man injured in Erwin Township ORV accident

ERWIN TOWNSHIP, MI— A Rochester Hills man is hospitalized, after his side-by-side crashed in Gogebic County last week.

The Sheriff’s Office says it happened Thursday around 5:15 p.m. on South Davis Road in Erwin Township. The 61-year-old driver and his female passenger were southbound when the driver decided to turn around. In the middle of the turn, the side-by-side slid off the road and flipped upside down into the ditch.

The driver was trapped underwater and couldn’t undo his seatbelt. The passenger got out uninjured, but wasn’t able to free the driver. Residents from a nearby home heard the commotion and performed CPR until law enforcement and paramedics arrived.

The man was taken to Aspirus Ironwood Hospital, then transferred to Duluth Trauma Center.

Officials say speed and alcohol were not factors in the accident.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
