Luce County accident claims woman's life

LAKEFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI— One person was killed in a traffic crash in Luce County Sunday.

Michigan State Police from the Sault Ste. Marie post say it happened around 9:50 a.m. on M-28 near County Road 444 in Lakefield Township.

Troopers say a Ford F-250 driven by a 19-year-old Newberry man was eastbound when the vehicle crossed the centerline. It struck a Chrysler minivan driven by Alice Nelson, 64, of Newberry.

Nelson was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup was taken to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital, treated, and released.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
