Teen killed in Duncan Township snowmobile crash

DUNCAN TOWNSHIP, MI— A 13-year-old Missouri girl has lost her life in a snowmobile accident in Houghton County.

Michigan State Police from the Calumet Post were dispatched Saturday around 11:50 a.m. to DNR Trail 8, near M-28, in Duncan Township.

Investigation shows the 13-year-old driver had been moving over to allow room for oncoming snowmobile traffic to pass when she was pulled from the trail by deep snow. She lost control of the sled and hit a tree.

The girl suffered a serious head injury. She was taken to Baraga County Memorial Hospital, where she later died.

The teen had been driving under the immediate supervision of her father.

The crash remains under investigation.

Assisting on scene were Bay Ambulance, Covington Township First Responders, and Dynamite Towing.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
