Snowmobiler airlifted from Mackinac Island after crash

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI— A Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station Traverse City had to airlift a 20-year-old woman from Mackinac Island, following a snowmobile crash over the weekend.

It happened Friday night on M-185, the perimeter road that circles the island. The woman was a passenger on a sled that crashed into a group of trees.

Police say the trees likely kept the snowmobile from plunging into Lake Huron.

The woman suffered serious back and head injuries and was flown to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City for treatment.

The 32-year-old male driver of the snowmobile was arrested after the crash. Officials say alcohol and/or drugs are suspected to be a factor in the incident.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
