Multiple-vehicle accident in Garden Township claims two lives

GARDEN TOWNSHIP, MI— Two people were killed and another injured in a multiple-vehicle crash in Delta County Friday afternoon.

Michigan State Police from the Gladstone Post were called just before 4 p.m. to US-2 near the Fishdam River in Garden Township. Troopers say a Toyota SUV and Chevy SUV were eastbound on the highway when a semi-truck and trailer approached in the westbound lane.

The semi lost control on the road and drifted north. The driver overcorrected by steering south and crossed into the eastbound lane, hitting the Toyota head-on.

Following that impact, the Chevy struck the rear of the semi’s trailer, which was sitting in the eastbound lane, and another semi and passenger vehicle collided as they attempted to stop on the highway.

The occupants of the Toyota, Gerald Weaver, 47, and Tara Weaver, 46, of Escanaba, were killed in the crash. The driver of the Chevy, a 38-year-old Oshkosh, Wisconsin man, was pinned inside his vehicle and had to be extricated. No other injuries were reported.

Speed and driving too fast for conditions are considered to be factors in the accident, which remains under investigation.

Agencies assisting in the incident included troopers from the Gladstone Post and Manistique Outpost, as well as Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers from the St. Ignace Post. Additional agencies included the Delta County Sheriff’s Department, DNR, Rampart EMS, Manistique EMS, Inwood Township Fire/EMS, Thompson Township Fire, Nahma Township Fire, Garden Township Fire, Gene’s Towing, and the Delta County Road Commission.
