Man dies in Gogebic County snowmobile accident

WAKEFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI— A Wisconsin man has been killed in a Wakefield Township snowmobile accident.

Michigan State Police from the Wakefield Post say it happened Sunday around 1:30 a.m. on Trail #2.

Investigation reveals a group of snowmobilers was westbound on the trail near Ramsay when the crash occurred.

A 53-year-old man from Berlin, Wisconsin was pronounced dead at the scene. A 54-year-old man on a second snowmobile was taken to Aspirus Grandview Hospital, then airlifted to Aspirus Hospital in Wausau for treatment of a broken leg. He remains in stable condition.

Names are being withheld at this time.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Assisting agencies were the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan DNR conservation officers, Beacon Ambulance, Michigan State Police Chaplin Corps and the Gogebic County Victim Services Unit.

The Michigan State Police encourages safe and prudent use of snowmobiles.
