Two trapped in vehicle following Keweenaw crash

EAGLE HARBOR TOWNSHIP, MI— Two people suffered serious injuries in a single-vehicle accident in Keweenaw County Wednesday.

Around 11:36 p.m., sheriff’s deputies came upon the crash along M-26 near Cat Harbor in Eagle Harbor Township. They say Jack Kilpela, 21, of Hancock was westbound when he failed to negotiate a curve. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.

Kilpela and his 21-year-old female passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Copper Harbor Volunteer Fire Department. They were taken to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital, then airlifted to UPHS-Marquette with critical injuries.

Officials say alcohol and speed are considered factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police, Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, Eagle Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, and Eagle Harbor First Responders.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
