Powell Township auto accident kills driver

POWELL TOWNSHIP, MI— A Skandia man has died from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash in Powell Township Thursday.

The Marquette County Sheriff's Office was notified of the accident around 6:30 a.m. It happened on County Road 550 near Saux Head Lake Road.

It appears the vehicle was northbound when it crossed the southbound lane, left the roadway, and crashed into the ditch.

The sole occupant of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Police believe the accident happened around 5 a.m. and was later discovered by a passing motorist, who called 911.

The driver was a 52-year-old Skandia Township man. His name has not yet been released, pending notification of family.

Powell Township Fire/EMS and UPHS-EMS assisted at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
