Man drowns in Marinette County's Butterfly Lake

WAUSAUKEE, WI— The Marinette County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a drowning in the town of Wausaukee over the weekend.

Sheriff Randy Miller says his office received notification Saturday around 4 p.m. of a possible drowning at Butterfly Lake.

The first deputy to arrive at the scene entered the lake and helped others retrieve the man—John Van Rossum, 47, of Kaukauna—from the water. The deputy administered CPR until an ambulance arrived.

Van Rossum was taken to Aurora Medical Center-Bay Area in Marinette, where he was later pronounced dead.

Officials say Van Rossum had been swimming when he called for help and went under.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
