Fatal Newton Township crash may have had medical cause

NEWTON TOWNSHIP, MI— The driver in a fatal crash in Mackinac County Wednesday afternoon may have suffered a medical incident.

That’s according to Sheriff’s deputies investigating the accident on US-2 near Gould City Road in Newton Township. They say around 2:35 p.m., a 71-year-old man was westbound in his pickup towing a camper. He crossed the centerline, left the roadway, and hit several trees in the ditch.

Officials say attempts to revive the unresponsive driver—the only person in the vehicle—were unsuccessful.

The Mackinac County Sheriff's Office says alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash.
